It was a cold crisp winters morning. The sky still dark, the moon full looking down. Frost covering the grass as you lay there still, peaceful and silent.
They started the shift like any other, catching up on the week, the usual banter flying to and fro waiting to see what jobs may come in unaware of what was to come.
As you lay there, she watched you, confused scared not knowing what to do, where to turn.
The screen lights up, they jump in and head of into the crisp morning dark silent concentrating on the job ahead.
She stands up and walks out the room, leaving where you lay, asleep and still.
The street lights up with flashes of blue lights. , the shrill of the siren breaking the quite of the early morning. They jump out grabbing bags and running to the already open door.
As you lay in silence, the sound of heavy boots coming up the footpath desperate shouting as they come through the door. They are met with silence ad they shout trying to find you.
You wait, you can’t call back, they keep shouting to try to find you. They shout to each other frantically searching.
Then he finds you and shouts to his mate “quick! In here” he lifts you up and cradles you in his arms just like you deserve! He holds you close fighting the tears back knowing what he has to do.
He holds you like your his own, his fingers pressing on your chest, he squeezes the bag to try to give you some air. They look at each other and with out a word they RUN! They run like never before.
The engine roars into life, the lights flashing and the siren wailing like it had a thousand times before. This time it sounded different as if the desperation of the crew was being amplified!!!
As they pulled up at hospital the doors fly open he holds you in his arms tears rolling down his face, he runs into the department and carefully puts you on the bed in front of the doctors and nurses. No handover is needed!!!
He stands back, eyes raw with emotion, tears freely running down his face, he is proud man but doesn’t care who sees him.
He looks on and says “I’m sorry!!!”
Be safe………..
