Ladies and Gentlemen, I am very pleased to announce this blog has kindly been guest published on Diagnosislob blog. I would like to introduce you to a brilliantly funny and down to earth person, please take the time to got to the blog you will enjoy…
Ella Shaw – I’m just another bum on another ambulance in London. The purpose of my blog to share experiences good, bad, funny and sad, to provoke debate, vent frustration’s and let people see the world through my cynical eyes! I hope you enjoy!
Quite simply read this :-http://www.barnet-today.co.uk/news.cfm?id=3449&headline=Man%20in%20court%20for%20paramedic%20assault
“So” I hear you say, you hear about this daily and that it’s not really news. Well people it is news and WILL NOT be accepted! I will tell you I HAVE knowledge of being in these situations, It SCARES the hell out of you, not knowing if you are going to live or die! Extreme comment yes! But that is what you feel at the time.
I am going to give you a general account of what happened but I am then going to tell you of the impact then you decide if it deserves to be in the news!!!
Right! This is not going to be pretty but it has to be said. Violence is not acceptable in any way shape or form. I am constantly reading in the paper and seeing on the television Violence and devastation everywhere.
I have just learnt of another serious assault on my colleagues working in London, this has sickened me beyond belief. The injuries that have occurred are horrific. The physical injuries are bad enough but the emotional trauma is worse. People all of us in the Emergency Services are here to HELP you!
We are also Human Beings we have loved ones, we have families people who care for us, we have sons and daughters, wives and husbands, girlfriends and boyfriend. Others out there that want to see us safe.
This is a problem that is on the increase and to be honest there are those out there that think “its part of the job” NO IT IS NOT!!!!
Would you go to work where ever you are and expect to be battered? to go to hospital with injuries that are going to put you out of action for months at a time? It will not be long before someone gets killed and then what will the public think?
I am going to tell you what happened! and I would like to know your thoughts. The reason I want to know is that I need to know we have public support.
The person that assaulted the Ambulance Crew and the Police Officers hopefully will get a very large severe sentence. However I do not have that much faith in the judicial system. There will be some random, ridiculous mitigating circumstances. As far as I am concerned there is no mitigating circumstances EVER that justify this.
I have never been able to understand why people even consider assaulting Ambulance, Police or Fire crews, we are here to help. I have heard some rubbish about the police need to expect that NO! the police are here to keep order and we all accept that by compliance. Yes when there is disorder some opportunist will use this as an excuse to be violent and the Police do a brilliant job in dealing with this. I have the up most respect for these guys as they have helped me on many an occasion to keep me safe. THANK YOU GUYS!
People who brick the fire brigade, what is going through your mind. These guys have a dangerous enough job trying to save lives and property by putting their lives selflessly on the front line to save YOUR LIFE!
And Ambulance crews, we do this job because we can and want to. We do FIGHT for your Life on occasion, we do not expect to be FIGHTING for our own at any point!!
So why do people feel the need to use violence on anyone is beyond me! Drugs and Alcohol generally have a large part to play in all this. I have met many a patient “apparently” unconscious, and when approached have gone from a sedate sleepy slumber to Attila the Hun in 0.04 of a second. Unless you are Usain Bolt then your are unlikely to get away quick enough to avoid injury.
The job was passed to the crew as a male that had passed out after an argument (usually a job where to get at the other party the person feigns unconsciousness) normally an easy job and more domestic related than ambulance related.
However based on what was said on the phone and what was real on the ground were two different things (again no fault of control as they can only go on what is said and what they hear in the background). The patient in question was bleeding from hands after Punching a window.
‘When the crews arrived the male in question was crawling on the floor attempting to stand and the crew being experienced asked him not to get up. He ignored them and after a bit of staggering he fell into a fence, breaking it, and that is when all hell broke loose. The crew did not stand a chance from the initial assault.’
He swung a fence post with the intention of knocking the head off one of the crew who thankfully was able to block unfortunately the force of the swing broke their wrist.
Then swinging again hit another crew member across the ribs and back causing more injuries, not at all fazed he carried on with his assault with ferocious accuracy and intent. The third Crew member was then hit on the wrist and then hit with such force round the back of the head the fence post broke.
The crew had pressed their emergency button and the police did arrive quickly, however the devil in carnate was in full swing and not afraid. The Police officers impeccable restraint During the struggle, will probably go unnoticed with the world as will the fact that he broke the nose of one officer and bit another (severely). He racially and verbally abused the police  but was eventually restrained, detained taken to hospital.
Not content with the ferocity and viciousness of the attack at the house he continued to racially and verbally abuse the hospital staff before being taken off to custody. Is this fair and just NO!
This attack impacts on everyone, the crew involved the judicial service, the ambulance service, the hospital staff, the police, the general population and yes YOU!
The crew members involved will probably be off for 4-6 weeks with their physical injuries, not to mention any extra time for the emotional trauma. Then you have to ask will they be back? I don’t know! I would not blame them for career changes, who comes to  work to have the crap beaten out of them?
This means there are two emergency response vehicle less on the road to deal with Life threatening Emergencies, for you that could mean there is no response to you or your loved ones who may be dying or in desperate need of help.
There is less police on the streets because they too are nursing injuries sustained in this vicious attack. One officer has a broken nose. The other has a traumatic 12 months of emotional distress, why? he has to wait and endure a period of monitoring to see if he has caught anything (horrendous) due to deep bites.
So less response officers out there to help You! or ME! when its vital.
Hopefully there will be a criminal prosecution for this man but at what cost to the tax payer (Thats you by the way). He has been charged with two counts of actual bodily harm, racially aggravated common assault, criminal damage and racially aggravated threatening behaviour.
and all for what? Think about it!!!
