If you have been watching the news you will see a great deal is going on concerning a national increase of 20,000 police officers. I want to update you on what I know and what this means. Before I do that a few other things.
Firstly, a huge thank you for the brilliant work over July. More detail here, but there is considerable reduction in outstanding calls to what we have seen over the last two years. We are no less busy but the impact of strong planning, escalation policies, more mobility, banded shifts, new control rooms shifts, webchat and general grip and hard work has resulted in much greater control.
Operationally we are starting to see a shift in the right direction on crimes like burglary. More work is needed still on robbery and violence but we have seen less high profile serious violence in the last few weeks. August will keep on testing us but we are definitely in a stronger place than last year. Thank you.
August sees the start of our technology changes with MyTime, the new duty management system, arriving on 22nd August. Please keep up the booking on and off and go to the WMP2020 portal where you can find training resources and top tips on using the system. This is a step forward, our first step on our tech drops. It will be followed in October/November by the new command and control system, Control Works, and then Connect, our main operational system in 2020. All of them will require an investment in time by you. I know that any change means extra effort from you to start with, but ultimately this will help you do your job better and benefit the public.
In the interim, Insight Search and Business Insight is available now and it’s clear that mobile users are using Insight Search well; colleagues in NPUs and Strategic Intelligence will be involved in a 30 day challenge from next week, to encourage everyone to make more use of these resources. Click here for quick guides on using these tools. Desktop users less so (it’s in your My Apps icon on the desktop). FLINTS will close down soon but most importantly it’s worth starting to use it more as the power of the search tool is amazing.
The introduction of Mira Books in the autumn represent a step change to how we carry out front line policing. The device is essentially a keyboard “bolt-on” for your mobile, fitted to response cars, so you can generate reports on the go. This is a significant way of making it easier for get on with your job without needing to return to the station – watch this space for more details!
So the 20K officers!
I was pleased the Prime Minister and Home Secretary came here to announce the national uplift. This is what I know:
In this context it is important we now set out what we intend to do with staffing this year in WMP before these additional resources arrive. As a result of our good work on transformation and efficiency this new money is being used to grow operational capability and that will be as follows:
Now here is the challenge. The pressure is very much here and now. We have real gaps, we are mid-change activity and this is an intense year. As an Executive Team we are trying to:
In return I want four things from you:
